Roundup may be harmful to humans. The nation's most popular herbicide may be causing users to develop a deadly type of blood cancer. The scientific research, especially when paired with the anecdotal evidence of more than 13,000 plaintiffs who filed suit against Roundup parent company Monsanto, seems to show an increased risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma and other types of cancer in those exposed to large amounts of glyphosate, the main cancer-causing ingredient in Roundup.
The link is so convincing to juries that the two plaintiffs in recent cases that went to trial received a May 2019 verdict and award that included $55 million in compensatory damages and $2 billion in punitive damages.
The Research Points to an Increased Risk of Cancer
According to research conducted by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in 2015, there may be a link between the main ingredient in Roundup, glyphosate, and cancers including non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Glyphosate is the most popular herbicide in the United States. Many popular weed killers used in both personal gardens and lawns and commercial applications have glyphosate as the primary active ingredient, including the Roundup family of products.
Most of the plaintiffs pursuing compensation from Roundup manufacturer Monsanto and their owner Bayer AG either have a non-Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis or lost a loved one to this type of cancer. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a group of blood cancers that begin in the lymph nodes or elsewhere in the lymphatic system. While there are treatments for non-Hodgkin lymphoma when diagnosed early, it can be deadly.
Understanding the Plaintiffs' Case
Like other plaintiffs looking to hold Monsanto and parent company Bayer AG liable for their damages related to a cancer diagnosis and treatment, Alva and Alberta Pilliod of Livermore, California, used Roundup weed killer for years. Both developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma. They allege their cancer occurred because of the glyphosate in the Roundup they used on their lawn, and that Monsanto knew of the dangers but continued to market the herbicide without including warnings.
In May 2019, the judge announced the verdict — and a significant award. The jury gave the couple $55 million in compensatory damages for their expenses and losses and an additional $1 billion each in punitive damages. Like the first case that went to trial last fall, an appellate court could greatly reduce this punitive award. Still, this is a significant payout that shows the strength of the case against Monsanto and Bayer AG.
